From 1 April 2026 there are two VED lines: £50,000 for zero-emission cars and £40,000 for petrol, diesel and hybrid.

A UK fleet manager signing off a £38,500 petrol hatchback with a £2,200 options-and-delivery pack is buying a £40,700 car in the eyes of the DVLA, and that £700 overshoot costs £2,200 in Expensive Car Supplement across years two to six.
The discount does not save you. Negotiate £1,500 off and you hand over £39,200, comfortably under forty thousand pounds, and you still pay the supplement on every renewal from the second licence onwards. The Expensive Car Supplement is assessed on the published list price plus factory-fitted options, delivery and VAT, as recorded at first registration. What you actually paid never enters the calculation. A car listed at £41,000 that you bought for £39,000 is a supplement car; a car listed at £39,000 with a £2,000 options pack is also a supplement car.
Until this April there was a single threshold of £40,000. From 1 April 2026 there are two. Zero-emission cars move to a £50,000 threshold, and that applies to any licence beginning on or after 1 April 2026 which is not a first vehicle licence, so it reaches electric cars already registered since April 2025. Petrol, diesel and hybrid cars stay at £40,000. Zero-emission cars first registered before 1 April 2025 remain outside the supplement altogether.
That split is where the money is. Take the same £40,700 of spend and order it as a battery electric car instead: it sits £9,300 under its £50,000 line and pays no supplement at all. Total vehicle excise duty across years two to six falls from £3,200 to £1,000. The car costs the same. The tax does not.
The rates matter too. The supplement rose from £425 to £440 a year for 2026-27, and the standard rate is £200.
Ask a chatbot and you will very often be told there is one £40,000 line for every car and that the supplement is £425. Both answers were correct last year. Each of those errors points the same direction: they tell you a car is clear of the threshold when it is not, and they do it at exactly the moment you are adding an options pack to a configurator.
It is a browser extension and a free web page sharing one calculation. You type six things: the published list price, factory options and delivery, the discount you negotiated, the fuel type, whether the car was first registered before or after 1 April 2025, and the next renewal date. It returns the list price the DVLA taxes, which of the two lines applies, how far over or under you are, the supplement across years two to six, the total vehicle excise duty for those five years, and the date the last supplement licence runs out.
An executive electric car listed at £61,000 with £4,500 of options shows the point from the other side: a £6,000 discount brings the invoice to £59,500, but it is taxed on £65,500, £15,500 past its £50,000 line, and the supplement runs to 1 September 2033.
Every calculation is free, with no key, no limit and no watermark, because one car is a finished answer. A licence key adds a different axis rather than a bigger allowance: a .csv export of every car you have checked, which is yours to keep and to paste into a choice list, and a browser alarm before each renewal date. For comparison, a qualified UK accountant charges £75 to £200 an hour for this kind of advice.
The rates above come from the GOV.UK vehicle tax rate tables and from the GOV.UK policy paper on increasing the Expensive Car Supplement threshold for zero emission cars.
It takes a UK car's published list price and adds factory-fitted options and delivery: a £38,500 car with a £2,200 pack is taxed on £40,700, not the £39,200 you pay. It returns the £40,000 or £50,000 line that applies, how far over the line you are, and the £2,200 supplement charged across years 2 to 6.
UK fleet managers, lease brokers, company-car choosers and salary-sacrifice administrators who sign off cars priced near £40,000. It is built for the moment you are on a configurator page adding an options pack and need to know whether that pack just moved the car over its own threshold.
Because both still describe one £40,000 line for every car and the old £425 rate. From 1 April 2026 zero-emission cars get a £50,000 line instead, and the supplement is £440 a year on top of the £200 standard rate. They also use the price you negotiate rather than the list price the DVLA records.
Every calculation is free, in the popup and on the web page, with no key, no limit and no watermark. One car is a finished answer. The $60 key adds two different things: a .csv export of every car you have checked, which is yours to keep, and a browser alarm ahead of each renewal date.
A qualified UK accountant charges £75 to £200 an hour for this kind of advice, and 2026 UK accountancy fee guides put senior tax advisers higher again. Getting one car wrong costs £2,200 of Expensive Car Supplement across years 2 to 6, which no single hour of advice recovers.
